One of the greatest parts of being a designer is having the freedom to go where the inspiration takes you. However, this can also be one of the most challenging parts as well. That’s a lot of pressure to come up with new designs and products let alone on a regular seasonal basis. Where do creatives find their inspiration? Is there a system? Perhaps some kind of formula? I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. Personally, I tend to find inspiration in the lovelies around me, our amazing city, and the different wood I have in stock. When someone comes to me with a special request, it’s always fun to collaborate and come up with something specific and special. It always turns out great and I love getting to make something that I wouldn’t necessarily on my own. Never underestimate the value (and enjoyment) of collaboration.
In celebration of Craft Year 2015, The Craft Council of BC and the VanDusen Garden are co-hosting an exciting event called Craft Year, Craft Beer. That’s right, beer and crafts. I am pumped to get to be a part of this new event and have the skateboard bottle openers featured. With less than a month away it got me thinking, what else can I make that go with this theme? First things first, go get beer. Can’t really brain storm beer accessories without supplies. Conveniently, Black Kettle Brewing is just over the tracks. Oh, and Frankenstrap leather studio is downstairs. So… after a couple fun nights at the shop working out design kinks I am happy to say BW skateboard growler carriers are debuting at Craft Year, Craft Beer!
This brings us back to sources of inspiration. I am pretty stoked on this new piece and love getting to use up a couple nose and tail skateboard bits lying around the shop. Without this theme (and beer) I doubt it would have come to life.
